soul mekanik - phil banks - 9 Dec Sugar ClubWe are preparing for another blast at Sugar Club. The date is 9th of December - Saturday.

This time we have a surprise guest DJs - Phil Banks & Soul Mekanik(Kelvin Andrews) are coming over!

Phil Banks

phil banksPhil started collecting dance-music around 1985, when through his friends older brother Phil Banks was exposed to electro funk & the breakdance scene, Phil Banks continued to buy electro, hip-hop & buy the end of the 80’s house….

In 1990 Phil Banks went to a rave & then!?…that was 16 years ago, since then he has spent the majority of his time buying music, promoting parties, DJing, meeting like-minded people & indulging in the lifestyle that comes with the fore mentioned.

As a DJ he has been spinning records for 11 years, playing around Dublin for 6 years (played Mono, Hub, Witness Festival) and he has started playing the odd gig in Europe in the last year with more in the pipeline.

Recent UK gigs have included Thekla (Bristol), Society (Sheffield), Hupendi (Stoke), Earwax (Exeter), UFO (Plymouth), Wax The Van (Exeter), Love Thy Neighbor (London)…plus his own parties in Plymouth & the surrounding areas…

His current party night ‘Musicismypoison‘ has been running for around a year & evolved from his previous night ‘Deadfly’ which had been running for 5 years…

And finally here is some audio candy to give you a taste of the special music blend of deep, balearic, space, dubby… stuff that Phil plays:

Kelvin Andrews (Soul Mekanik)

soul mekanikKelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer have been part of the British dance music landscape for almost as long as anyone can remember. Working together in adopted hometown Stoke-On-Trent for the best part of two decades, the party-hungry brothers have more history than most.

Over the years their projects have included commercial house production line Sure Is Pure, jazz-sampling chart botherers Blueboy, baggy chancers Candy Flip and Balearic beach boys Sound 5. Constantly evolving musically throughout their 17-odd years behind the mixing desk, they are nothing if not survivors.

Yet for all their experience and commercial success over the years, it’s their latest re-incarnation that has won them most fans among DJs and dance music enthusiasts. Since re-appearing as Soul Mekanik back in 1998, they’ve been building a reputation as acid housers with attitude; champions of the sort of electronic house that manages to sound both lovingly retro and thrillingly futuristic at the same time.
